Administrative Fines (2017): In its decision dated October 13, 2017, the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH) imposed administrative fines of 20 million HUF each on the Church of Scientology of Hungary and its central organizational body for unlawful data processing practices. Administrative Fines (2018): In December 2018, the data protection authority issued additional fines of 12 million HUF each against the Church of Scientology of Hungary and its Nyíregyháza mission for further data processing non-compliance. Judicial Review (Metropolitan Court): The Church of Scientology of Hungary legally challenged the 2017 NAIH regulatory decision before the Budapest Metropolitan Court. Supreme Court Appeal (Curia): Following the lower court’s ruling, the organization appealed to the Curia (the Supreme Court of Hungary). Prosecutorial Indictment: On December 11, 2023, the Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office filed formal indictments against the financial directors of the organization and their co-defendants in connection with a budget fraud case totaling 600 million HUF. The prosecution requested enforceable custodial prison sentences. Current Judicial Status: The criminal case is currently in the trial phase before the Budapest Metropolitan Court against defendants Sz. K. and associates under Case No. 5.B.470/2023. To date, the court has held 12 hearings on the matter, with the most recent session convening on June 19, 2026. Prosecutorial and Judicial Action: According to an official press release issued by the Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office on January 8, 2024 (“Therapy Believed to Treat Addiction Conducted Without License”), the competent court issued a summary penal order without a full trial.
Sentencing Details: The Pásztó District Court handed down suspended custodial sentences to 21 individuals who were found to have conducted unauthorized medical and healthcare interventions at the Narconon drug rehabilitation center located at the Garáb estate in Nógrád County. In addition to the criminal sentences, the court ordered the defendants to pay several million HUF in accumulated legal and investigative costs.
